For Novo Nordisk senior vice president Andy Ajello, flexibility (in more ways than one) is the key to making his routine of movement work for him. The basics for him include 30 minutes a day of cardio on a treadmill, elliptical, or bike, followed by 15 or 20 minutes of stretching, which he finds “makes a big difference.” In addition to the stretching, Ajello is flexible on his timing. If he's working from his office, he usually hits the gym for 45 minutes on the way home from work. If he's on the road, as he often is in his job, he tries his best to stay in a hotel with a decent workout room: “The bottom line there is that you get up in the morning to do it because you save the time of having to drive to work,” he said. “When you're there for meetings and dinners with colleagues or customers, exercise helps keep you energized and focused and not just going through the motions the next day.”
Don't let the examples of triathlon training, bike races, and working out and stretching in the gym scare you off. Adding a brisk walk or two to your day is relatively easy to do and will definitely make a positive difference for your blood pressure, weight, stress level, and risk for diseases like type 2 diabetes. Monica Oswald, who we met earlier in this book, makes it a habit to take a 20 minute walk with her dog every morning and another 20 or 30 minutes around her office campus at lunch. Anne Bryant's walking routine around her neighborhood shows how easy it can be to touch bases not just in the physical domain but also the mental, relational, and even spiritual domains as well:
I love to walk outside. I see the seasons so much more. I have my cell phone on my hip so every once in a while I take pictures of what I see. I took some wonderful pictures this fall of a tree in our neighborhood that had these brilliant red leaves. The maples this year were just amazing. I don't think it was my color-blind eyes. All of my neighbors said the same thing. There was this pile of leaves by the tree, and I took several shots. That was kind of fun.
